Talk About Deep Tissue

It's long overdue that we all talk about Deep Tissue. Folks ask for it all the time but many don't really know what it is. It's not their fault because most therapists/spas don't correct this and perpetuate this miseducation further by how they're marketing Deep Tissue sessions.

Let's start by defining what Deep Tissue (DT) really means. It's simply the depth of efficacy of manual/massage therapy. The pressure can vary from gentle to firm. The direction of treatment can be a traction hold, 15° glide/hold, 45° shearing pressure and up to 90° downward pressure. It's not the amount of pressure, be it mild, moderate or firm.

Often folks will inquire about getting a really good DT massage. What they're really asking for is an extra firm Swedish Massage (SM). This type of massage can unnecessarily cause harm or injury to more superficial tissues. This can also injure the therapist, cutting their career short. That's why I take a different approach to treating deep seeded pain, to reduce risk of injury to myself and my clients.

Many have heard of Myofascial Release (MFR) or Myofascial Techniques (MFT). If you want to get technical, all massage therapy is Myofascial in origin. What's different from therapist to therapist is their approach. Although, my practice leans more towards MFR/MFT, I offer what is best described as Integrated Techniques (IT). That's when an LMT uses multiple approaches and techniques fluidly during treatment sessions. I always work within appropriate pain tolerances. I only work within my scope of practice. I'll never do work that injures myself.

So, do I offer a "really good Deep Tissue massage"? In truth, I do, but that's not really what folks are asking. If you're looking for some bone raking, skin collecting, extra, extra firm Swedish Massage, I'm just not the therapist for you. I'm here to reduce your pain, not cause further injury.

Be well,

Jen
